Psychotherapy is a supportive, evidence based way of addressing life’s many challenges. Within therapy, you and your psychologist will work together to address issues that may be affecting your quality of life, using a series of strategies and steps to make sure that you can achieve recovery.
But before you can start addressing a challenge, you must know what’s wrong. That is why Innovative Counselling Solutions offers both psychological and neuropsychological assessments in Calgary to assess, diagnose, or uncover brain functioning deficits in relation to emotions, behavior and cognition and put you on a path towards long lasting solutions.
Psychological Assessment vs. Neuropsychological Assessment
A psychological assessment evaluates general cognitive and personality functioning, which is geared toward the diagnoses of psychiatric conditions. A standard assessment has the capacity to diagnose a condition such as ADHD based on behavior, but it lacks the specificity to understand what underlying neurological processes are causing the symptoms and therefore cannot give customized recommendations for treatment.
Neuropsychological assessment on the other hand, involves a comprehensive assessment of cognitive processes. It involves the evaluation of neurodevelopmental disorders to understand the etiology of a disorder. Neuropsychology integrates genetic, developmental, and environmental history with testing data to better understand brain functioning. Combined with cognitive and personality functioning, neuropsychological assessment can specify the origin and development of a disorder and customize recommendations.
Areas of the brain evaluated by neuropsychologists include:
- Attention and Concentration
- Language Skills
- Sensorimotor skills
- Visual-spatial functioning
- Motor Skills
- Social Skill development
- Executive Function
- Emotional and Personality Development
Psychological & Neuropsychological Assessments for Children, Teens, and Adults
Psychological and Neuropsychological assessments generally use a series of tools to determine whether you or someone you love may be struggling with an otherwise difficult to diagnose disorder or issue. The range of conditions that can lead to neuropsychological impairments include:
- Major Neurocognitive Disorders (e.g., Seizures/Epilepsy, Autism Spectrum Disorders, Alzheimers, Dementia, Asperger’s)
- Intellectual/Learning Disorders (problems with reading, math, language, writing, dyslexia)
- Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI), Concussion
- Behavioral Disorders
- Social Disorders
In both adults and children, these challenges can sometimes be a lifetime struggle without proper assessment. Our services make sure that you’re able to take the necessary steps to address the issue.
Neuropsychological Assessments in Calgary
At Innovative Counselling Solutions, our assessment process begins with an initial interview with the client, and in some cases with family members (with the consent of the client). This is followed by administering a series of tests to evaluate the client’s cognitive and/or psychological functioning. The assessment can take several hours, although the duration may depend on the purpose and the nature of the referral.
After completing the assessment, the tests are scored and the results are analyzed in conjunction with the client’s self-report, observable behavior and medical report. A detailed report of the findings addressing the referral question is written and feedback is provided to the client, family and other referral sources depending on the purpose of the assessment.
Innovative Counselling Solutions is one of the few providers of neuropsychological assessment in Calgary, and we’re confident that we have the tools and experience necessary to provide you with a complete diagnosis, or information you need to move forward with improving your quality of life.
